Broomhill Estate is a brand-new immersive arts venue in the South West. The estate is 103 acres of pure imagination set in the heart of an ancient woodland valley. It’s just 15 minutes’ drive from the wilds of Exmoor, a stone’s throw from surf-Mecca Croyde, 30 minutes from picturesque Clovelly and 10 minutes from Woolacombe, the Sunday Times’ beach of the year 2021. It’s perfectly positioned for visitors seeking to escape to inspirational landscapes and immerse themselves in art and culture.
The estate houses over 200 sculptures from artists, including Ronald A Westerhuis, Giles Penny, Tim Shaw, Mike Roles, Carol Peace, Antonia Spowers and Dorcas Casey, to name a few. This contemporary art sanctuary is also home to the National Sculpture Prize for emerging artists, an annual competition now in its 11th year.
At the heart of the estate is a newly renovated, seven-bed boutique art hotel and fine-dining restaurant, originally built in 1913. Every bedroom is unique and features a super king Roche Bobois bed topped with a Sleepeeze mattress.
The bedroom designs have taken inspiration from and are named after cult classics. You can sleep in Moonrise Kingdom, Amelie, Velvet Goldmine, Clockwork Orange, Lost in Translation, Betty Blue and Grey Gardens. In celebration of the silver screen, the hotel also features a cinema lounge that houses authentic Hollywood props from films, including Jumanji, Highlander, Alien, 47 Ronin, Fight Club, Die Hard, Tomb Raider and many more.
Part of the hotel’s allure is that everything is for sale, from the art and sculpture to the furniture, fixtures and fittings. Guests are invited to be inspired and take a little bit of Broomhill Estate home with them.
The Broomhill team worked tirelessly to devise and design the hotel in the spring of 2021, during the Covid-19 lockdown. They wanted to provide a luxury experience for hotel guests, choosing to partner with quality brands, including Roche Bobois, Ralph Lauren, Temple Spa, Divine Savages and Sleepeezee. Attention to detail was paramount – there are so many discreet touches that make the experience truly special. They have even designed bespoke scents for each room in partnership with HoYo Botanicals.
‘The average person spends 26 years asleep during their life,’ said Broomhill Estate General Manager Jacqui Dabell. ‘We wanted to make sure guests have the best sleep possible when they visit so they wake up refreshed and at peace. The easiest way to ensure we invested in a luxury mattress was to get one we already knew and loved. Five years ago, before the idea of Broomhill was conceived, we invested in a Sleepeezee mattress and have never looked back. The decision and process working with them was easy.’
