From Sneezes to Snoozes: How to Pollen-Proof Your Bedroom

After a long day dealing with hay fever, the last thing you need is pollen following you into your bedroom and disrupting your sleep. Yet, it does – on clothes, on hair, on pets – even through your window. During the summer months, pollen accumulates on the soft surfaces of your bedroom, triggering hay fever symptoms overnight. Whilst eliminating pollen entirely is almost impossible, simple changes to your sleep routine can go a long way to lessen symptoms.

Leave pollen at the door:

Once we get home after a summer’s day, our first thought is to sit back and relax. But before you switch on the telly or make a cup of tea, take the first steps to stop the spread of pollen in your home. Change into something clean and comfy and have a shower to remove pollen after spending time outdoors. During the day, close your doors and windows to keep allergens out. Stopping pollen at the door can be the start of getting your sleep routine back on track.

Keep fabrics fresh:

Regularly washing your bedding is recommended to everyone, but for those who suffer from hay fever, taking extra precautions can greatly benefit your sleep. Ensure to wash sheets once a week during late spring and summer. Dry clothes inside rather than on an outdoor washing line, as pollen quickly accumulates on fabric and increases your indoor pollen count. Lastly, keep in mind that pollen gathers on all soft furnishings – carpets, curtains and upholstered furniture included – so vacuum and wipe with a damp cloth regularly.

Sleep without four-legged friends:

Nearly half of all UK pet owners share a bed with their dog or cat. Our four-legged friends may be excellent companions – but they’re equally excellent pollen carriers. Keeping pets off the bed and out of the bedroom can be an effective way to reduce pollen within your sleep environment. Make sure to wash dogs after walking on high pollen count days and clean your hands after cuddles.

Create a wind-down routine:

Before bed, spend a moment to prepare your room. Wipe surfaces with a damp cloth, close windows if pollen counts are high and gently wind down for a relaxing night’s sleep. For more advice, please speak to a pharmacist or healthcare professional.
