Keeping Your Pooch Cool This Summer

With the summer months fasting approaching, we know that you all want to have fun and enjoy the warmer weather with your pooches. However, it is important to know how to keep your pooch safe during these temperatures and what to look out for should they have had a little too much sun.

Keep their water fresh and cool

It goes without saying that just like you, your dog should stay hydrated. Refilling your dog’s water bowl regularly will mean the water can cool them down and it also helps keep the water fresh too. Another nice little trick is to add ice cubes or give your dog some ice cubes as a treat or to play with – keeping them cooler for longer.

Take a dip and provide shade

Your dog may enjoy sunbathing with you in the garden but prolonged sun exposure can cause heatstroke for dogs.  Placing a small paddling pool filled with water in a shaded area in the garden will help keep your away from direct sunlight and keep them entertained (for a little while anyway). If your dog shares a garden with young children, remember to take all necessary precautions for the safety of kids around water.

Never leave them alone in cars

You know the feeling when the hot air hits you in the face when you open the car door for the first time after a really hot day? Temperatures in cars can soar much higher than you think. Winding down the windows while you pop into the shop isn’t always enough, there can sometimes not be enough air circulating and dehydration can happen quicker if the dog is excited or panting more than usual.

What to watch out for

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke in dogs can be extremely dangerous. Here’s what to watch out for:

  • Excessive panting
  • Drooling or salivating
  • Agitation or restlessness
  • Increased heart rate
  • Breathing distress
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
